Baby Bottles – Use Rubber & Glass Not Plastic and Silicone

Plastic and silicone bottles should be avoided to ensure this doesn’t become a source of microplastics for babies or endocrine disruption.

Key Takeaways

  • Microplastics are not disposable by the body
  • Storing/heating liquids in plastic allows for microplastics to enter the liquid
  • Silicone is not a safe alternative to plastic
  • Glass/metal/rubber are safe alternatives

Talk about a plastic nightmare, plastic and silicone are taking over the baby industry. Not only are parents using it for toys (that may end up in a child’s mouth) but to deliver formula or breast milk to their kids. While we do receive microplastics in our food and from the air we breathe why double down by using plastic products to feed your baby?

When microplastics enter the body they cause inflammation because your immune system doesn’t recognize them and starts to attack. Some chemicals found in plastics also inhibit human cells from reducing oxidation. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are linked to cancer. Microplastics are also endocrine disruptors that play a key role in your body’s regulation (Read more).

Heating the plastic only increases the volume of microplastics. While glass bottles with a silicone nipple are better there are still recommendations not to use silicone for cooking. Silicone has also been linked as an endocrine disrupter (Read more).

My husband and I agree that we will not use plastics for our babies. The bottle itself seemed fairly simple to replace with a glass bottle, however, we didn’t quite know how to replace the nipple. Well apparently we just didn’t think about the problem long enough, one google search later and we realized rubber nipples are a good alternative.
